The COELMO DC generator set often operates at an average load very low, especially when used in conjunction with a renewable resource generation system (solar, wind, etc.).

When this is the case, it increases fuel consumption and shortens maintenance intervals, also due to the higher amount of combustion residue.

 

DCi Series Generators

COELMO® DCi Series Generator sets Variable speed generators have been designed and implemented to solve the problems of low efficiency and high maintenance.

With a permanent magnet generator (PMG), electronic management and AC/DC converter, the COELMO® DCi generator set always runs at speed to maximise maintenance frequency and reduce noise, with stable voltage and low output ripple.

COELMO® DCi series variable speed generator sets are recommended for applications where peak power is significantly higher than the average load, achieving fuel and maintenance savings of approximately 40% compared to traditional generator sets.

COELMO Generators

Generators in telecommunications

BTSs are emergency components of any mobile phone network as they allow the user to access the network. The transmission of voice and data and the widespread deployment of wireless services require a small amount of power, but continuously and reliably.

Coelmo has developed several high-efficiency solutions for BTS sites, from the most traditional to full hybrid systems that use alternative energy sources, battery storage systems and variable-speed DC generating units that drastically reduce the environmental impact in terms of emissions. Coelmo is able to offer the ideal solution for all environmental and usage conditions, minimising capital costs (CapEx) and optimising operating costs (OpEx).

Alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC)?

Nowadays, most telecommunications equipment is designed for DC power. If an AC unit is installed, a DC rectifier is required, which loses almost 5-10% of efficiency. DC rectifiers are also a common point of equipment failure in telecommunications facilities.

By using a DC generator set in a hybrid system, a rectifier is not required.

  • better energy efficiency = less fuel consumption
  • less equipment heating = less site cooling = less fuel consumption
  • less frequent maintenance = lower maintenance costs

An additional advantage of a hybrid system based on a DC generator is that a separate battery charger is not required, as the generator can charge the battery bank directly.

Fixed or variable speed gensets?

A variable-speed genset is a genset that is able to regulate power according to the load at a particular location.

Unlike traditional generator sets, which can only operate at standard speeds (3000/1500 rpm @ 50 Hz or 3600/1800 rpm @ 60 Hz) delivering only rated power, the variable speed generator set, equipped with a permanent magnet generator (PMG) and electronic management system, is designed to deliver the exact power required by the site, following load changes, maximising interval operation and reducing noise.
